BIOGRAPHY

LEE K. JOHNSON IS AN ARTIST WHO HAS A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THE ART FIELD.  EARLY IN HIS CAREER AS A MUSEUM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/ CURATOR, AND DIRECTOR OF ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM.  DURING HIS MANY YEARS AS A UNIVERSITY ART PROFESSOR, AND MORE RECENTLY, AS EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF ART, HE HAS CONTINUED TO BE A HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE ARTIST.   HIS DEDICATION HAS TRANSLATED INTO THE INVESTIGATION AND EXPERIMENTATION OF ACRYLIC PAINTING IN MANY FORMS. AFTER FORTY-EIGHT YEARS OF WORKING IN ACRYLICS HE HAS RETURNED TO OIL PAINTING AND THE LANDSCAPE.  

THE INSIGHT INTO THE LANDSCAPE DIRECTION AND HIS NEW WORK, LEE STATES THAT, “PLACES IN THE LANDSCAPE, THE NAME, THE CONTRAST, UNEXPECTED ELEMENTS, GIVE SYMBOLIC REFERENCE TO WHAT I SEE, FEEL, AND UNDERSTAND NATURE TO BE.  THE SHAPE AND RHYTHM OF ALL NATURAL FORMS AS IT IS DESCRIBED BY COLOR AND LINE.  LINE COURSING THROUGH FORM, STARTING, STOPPING, INTERSECTING, AND STARTING AGAIN.  IT CREATES THE INTEREST, THE VITALITY, AND THE DYNAMIC NATURE OF FORM”.

HE WAS BORN LEE KARYL JOHNSON IN NEBRASKA IN 1935.  AFTER HIGH SCHOOL HE SPENT THREE YEARS IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS.  ON RETURNING HOME, HE MARRIED, AND SET OFF FOR ART SCHOOL UNDER THE G. I. BILL.  HE RECEIVED HIS BACHELORS DEGREE IN FINE ART FROM THE MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOL OF ART AND HIS MASTERS DEGREE IN FINE ART FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO.  HE HAS BEEN REPRESENTED BY SEVERAL GALLERIES OVER THE YEARS, AND HE HAS CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT NATIONALLY AND REGIONALLY.  LEE’S WORK HAS BEEN IN SEVERAL TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS, INCLUDING, MASTERPIECES FROM THE MUSEUM OF NEW MEXICO,1970 - 71.  FEDERATION OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN STATES, COUNCIL ON THE ARTS, FIVE COLORADO ARTISTS TO SEVEN WESTERN STATES, 1971 – 73.  ART FACULTY OF COLORADO, FIVE PENNSYLVANIA UNIVERSITIES, I981 – 82.  A FEW OF HIS AWARDS INCLUDE, FELLOWSHIP, SKOWHEGAN SCHOOL OF PAINTING & SCULPTURE, NYC – SKOWHEGAN, MAINE, 1960.  NEW MEXICO ART COMMISSION, SELECTED WORK FOR THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, SANTA FE, 1965.  ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FELLOWSHIP, ALONG WITH A NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS FELLOWSHIP, ROSWELL MUSEUM/ANDERSON FOUNDATION.  HIS WORK CAN BE FOUND IN SEVERAL PERMANENT COLLECTIONS INCLUDING, THE DENVER ART MUSEUM, MUSEUM OF NEW MEXICO, THE ROSWELL MUSEUM AND ART CENTER, NEW MEXICO, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, MADISON, RAYMOND JONSON MUSEUM AND GALLERY,ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., ANDERSON MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO.  CORPORATE COLLECTIONS, INCLUDING, MARRIOTT GROUP, EXETER DRILLING & EXPLORATION COMPANY, UNITED MESA BANKS, FURR’S CORPORATION, MACINTYRE OIL COMPANY.
